short film analysis -1,2,3 & 4

Curfew:
In Curfew, the film has a constant use of colour to help show the contrast between different environments and to set the mood between the characters we follow through the film. The the dirty red used when the man is self-harming in the bathroom and matches the phone he answers which stop him from cutting. The bright, neon blues of the bowling alley create a more exciting and nostalgic atmosphere that could call a person back to their childhood. the dirty browns and almost sepia-toned filter when the man visits a building to retrieve his things it creates a disturbing atmosphere that isn't suitable for a child. The usage of the lights are significant when he takes the child home and some lights are lit, one being pink - this could represent a bond being made between uncle and niece. The red colour is used the most with there being a reference to the self harm the main character does, like the red car lights seen when he takes the bus home to resume what he was doing. The lighting in this short film helps distinguish the emotions and atmosphere created within the scene with large amounts of colour or subtle hints.

Night Fishing:
In this Korean film, the sound appears as very important and the use of each noise helps create a creepy atmosphere that is needed throughout to enhance the plot successfully. The first use of the music was this song sang by elderly korean men dressed in suits and hanbok hats, and the music is sang poorly to help us understand that this song is in the head of a middle aged man going to go fishing by the lake, and the subtle hints of noise really help to tell the story when the plot may seem confusing at first, like when the man attempts to real in the 'fish' an ominous sound fades in to build in the tension as to what he caught. The music during the song used to wish the man passage into the afterlife, the song is erie and almost disturbing to listen to as these grieving people sob into their hands, making the moment more terrifying than sorrowful. Another subtle use of sound that I felt worked really well to create an eerie feeling was the one note played when the film ends at the lake, the note sounded deep and distorted, making the death of this man seem tragic and something out of the ordinary

la Jetee:
In this film, the use of pictures really helped make this movie unique and one of a kind. The photos used help capture each moment, as if it was trapped in the past, and the photos taken as if it was a storyboard instead of a movie. Some shots really made the film feel like a man replaying his memories in his head before dying, for example all of the looks the woman gave to the camera and all of the angles they were taken from created an effect that mimics a dream like state that you cannot remember in full detail. When the movie does use videos, it is only once, and that is when the woman in the film is awoken from sleeping and looks at the man who was made to go into the past and future, and the usage helps show how out of everything he remembered, the eyes of this woman were what he captured in detail. Some of the images had no transition, but when the narrator shows the catastrophe made from the war, the images fade and/or zoom into frame almost to make the viewer pay attention to the damage made, which I think is a nice subtle touch to an already interesting style of film.

Wasp:
In Wasp, the aspect that caught my eye was the costume design with all the children and the mother, as it revealed lots to the audience. The children are dressed poorly, and the baby is barely covered with no nappy - this instantly shows their state of poverty that the mother cannot even afford nappies for her baby. The mother later goes out with a man she seems to fancy, and instantly her clothes are switched for short-shorts, a more provocative top with earrings and jewelry that we never see any other time - the clothing choice shows how this mother wants to hide how poor she actually is and try to be wealthier than she actually is. The other characters that we briefly see also have lower quality clothing, and often wear what seems to be nightwear which shows how people in the community all struggle to survive, and that is the reason for their fighting and aggression.
